LORETTA LYNN – 50TH Anniversary Collection

LORETTA LYNN – 50TH. Anniversary Collection

This album celebrates a career that has lasted 50 years. On listening to this double album of 36 tracks, it is easy to see why Loretta Lynn has had over 75 hit songs. The music of her early years (pre 1966) are quite basic in content, the lyrics honest and simple. In 1966 she started writing her own material, as “You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man)” it became her first number one. Having established her own country style, the songs became feistier, facing up to the social issues at the time, from all walks and situations in life. At times her songs were aimed at her husband, as “Don’t Come Home A’Drinking (With Loving On Your Mind)”; some “fighting to keep her man” songs, such as “Fist City” and “Your Squaw Is On The Warpath” these were very controversial songs in those days. It paved the way for ladies to express their own views and observations in song.
Between 1966 and 1978 she attained 40 hits, of which 16 reached number one. Following a tour of the UK with Conway Twitty they decided to record together. Their chemistry earned them 5 number one hit songs including “Lead Me On”.
“Coal Miners Daughter” tells of her life, it became her signature tune, and was made into a film.
“She’s Got You” has her talking to the new woman in his life, who now has his love, but she still has the memories and photographs of their time together.
“Rated X” says that once a woman’s marriage has failed, tongues wag, women will call her bad, the men just hope she is.
“The Pill”. He promised her the world, but her life was his bed and their children, now she is on the pill she has changed her maternity dress for a mini skirt.
“The Letter”. A duet with Conway Twitty, it tells of a cheating husband. To make him jealous, she asks a former boyfriend to write her a love letter. He tells her later that he meant every word he wrote in the letter.
Conway Twitty sings on eight of the tracks on these albums.
I was impressed with the musical backing which never overpowered the vocals. If you are a Loretta Lynn fan or enjoy country music of yesteryear, I am sure you will find a lot of your favourite songs among the 36 tracks on this 50th. Anniversary Collection. This album is a trip down memory lane.
