This is the debut album from the five piece Canadian band. The band’s vocalist Shawn Tavenier has written eight of the tracks, with band members Anders Drerup and Tyler Kealey contributing to make eleven tracks in total.
The opener “The Devil Loves Rock And Roll” is a Country rocker which tells of how a young lady makes him weak at the knees as he watches her dance moves. He feels he is losing control with his devilish thoughts. Tony Raybould, on drums, provides a beat for dancing.
The powerful voice of Shawn puts a Country feel to the mid paced “Time On You” aided by John Steele’s steel guitar and piano riffs from Tyler Kealy. The song is about starting his life anew, living it up and partying, as he is not wasting anymore time missing her love.
“Cherry Pie (She’s My Baby)” a slower paced song, has a 1940 / 50’s blues feel.
“Lost Souls & Losers”. It tells of a man who is being brought to his knees, as he feels he is walking a tightrope to please the woman he loves. Maybe it’s time for him to come down to earth and lead his own life.
“February Frontier”. Banjo to the fore on this song with a Western theme. It somewhat resembles the music of “Ghost Riders In The Sky”.
“Something Like A Change”, Shawn is joined by Patricia Larkin, one of the guest backing vocalists. It is a complicated love song which says his love for her will never change, but she is unsure of her feelings. Undecided if she will always stay with him, but she is not looking for a change at present.
Musically, this album is a showcase for the fine musicians; They play a plethora of Country Music instruments, as banjo, fiddle, lap steel, pedal steel, mandolin etc. with the discrete inclusion of a saxophone and some really dexterous piano playing from the phrenetically nimble fingers of Tyler Kealey. On some tracks the vocals are overpowered by the music, making it difficult to understand the lyrics.
Country Music journalists, who have seen the band “live” in the UK, confirm that they are very accomplished multi-instrumentalists, who are as good on stage as they are on this studio recording. Recommendation indeed.
