Dance Til Your Stockings Are Hot And Ravelin’

This seven track EP by bluegrass band The Grascals is to celebrate the 50th. Anniversary of the Andy Griffiths Show. ‘Mayberry’s Finest Brand Foods’ sponsors this album.
In 2005, The Grascals won the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) “Emerging Artist of the Year Award”. In 2006 and 2007, they won the IBMA “Entertainer of the Year”.
Unfortunately, I have never seen the Andy Griffiths Show, so I have had to visualize the picture painted by this EP. It’s a Hoedown, the gals are in gingham gowns, the cowboys in their best boots, they’re dosey doe-ing and two steppin’ around the barn to a bluegrass band. The old folk are clapping hands, tapping their feet and sippin’ from a mason jar.
The EP contains six classics from the Andy Griffiths Show. First track “Dooley” tells of a man who had an illegal ‘moonshine’ liquor Still. The last verse is thus; “The day ole Dooley died / The women folk looked sorry / And the men stood around and cried / Now Dooley’s on the mountain / He lies there all alone / They put a jug beside him / And a barrel for his stone /”.
“Stay All Night (Stay a Little Longer)” A familiar song that needs no explanation.
“Ol’ Joe Clark” is an instrumental that shows the musical expertise of The Grascals. A real fast and furious foot-tapper
“Leaning On The Everlasting Arms”. I would class this as Gospel. I rather like it.
“Boil Them Cabbage Down”. I have heard this song many times over the years, but was unsure as to what it was about, so viewed the lyrics on the ‘net, and am still none the wiser! A typical verse…..”Once I had an old grey mule / How that mule would kick / He kicked with his dying breath / He shoved his hind feet down his throat / And kicked himself to death /”
“Mayberry’s Finest Theme” tells of the gastronomic delights of Mayberry’s products. (Mayberry it seems has sponsored this EP)
The bonus track is “Boy, Giraffes Are Selfish” This, apparently was a catch phrase on the Show. A curious title, it could mean giraffes can see much further than we can, as they have longer necks.
The Grascals are very proficient musically. This album will, without doubt, be a treat for those who can recall The Andy Griffiths Show with fondness. It will also appeal to those who enjoy bluegrass music of bygone days.
